AMPFIELD, modern parish carved out of Hursley
A very difficult name; apparently containing Old English 'an' 'one, single' and 'feld'='open land'. If there were forms like hypothetical 'Anefeld' in the Middle Ages, we could confidently translate 'lonely open land'; but there are none. Perhaps it is a 3 element compound with the middle one lost (a so called Klammerform) eg hypothetical 'Ansetlfeld'='hermitage open land'. But there is no certainty.
